General


During your stay abroad, your family will be immersed in a new language. It is not necessary for your family to also speak this language of the host location at home as well. It is in fact very important for your children to continue speaking their mother tongue at home. Parents are advised to keep exposure to the mother tongue as consistent as possible for children. Inadequate exposure to the mother tongue increases the chance that the children will “unlearn” this language. It is essential not only for children to follow formal mother tongue lessons during the entire expatriation, but also to consistently speak the language at home.

Recent studies have shown that a minimum of 30% of total language exposure should be in a language if this language is expected to be mastered fluently. Thus, formal mother tongue lessons alone will not account for 30% of total language exposure during expatriation. Using the  mother tongue at home (speaking, reading, watching television, playing board games, etc.) in addition to formal lessons is essential for children to successfully keep up the mother tongue!

For several reasons we advise that the mother tongue is maintained, even if you do not intend to return to your home country.

The first reason is that plans may change. Keeping up the mother tongue keeps options open for a smooth return to the local school system in your home country.This also holds for the option to attend university in the home country.

Furthermore scientific studies proved that a good mastery of the mother tongue contributes to a good mastery of a second or third language. Children are kept "in balance" cognitively if they develop their mother tongue language alongside their day school language.

And last but not least, your mother tongue is part of your identity. It enables your child to keep in touch with family and friends back home and to understand his or her cultural identity.

Distance Education/NTC-online


NTC-online works with a fixed year schedule. All exercises have to be completed within the school year in order to make sure that a child will have no significant curricular gap compared to same-aged peers in the Netherlands or Belgium.

Within this fixed schedule we provide flexibility. If this is insufficient, the teacher can be contacted to make specific arrangements.

Yes, Edufax is suitable for children with a diagnosis of dyslexia. We offer an Extra Program to support students with this type of special educational need.

It is no problem to start NTC-online during the school year. A child can start anytime.

No and yes. NTC-online is meant for native speakers, not for children who do not speak or understand Dutch.

However, if there is some basis in Dutch (for example, the child previously attended a Dutch primary school) and there is a Dutch-speaking adult available for support, we do have possibilities, for example in an Individual Program. Please contact us to discuss the options!

 

Before enrolling in NTC-online, parents must provide Edufax with recent school reports and a completed questionnaire. If necessary, admissions tests will be sent. Based on this information, our SEN team will decide which program will be most suitable.

Language Courses


To provide children with an optimal preparation for their new school language, we try to make their language course as individualized as possible. For this reason we usually arrange a separate course for each child. Only in cases that children are close in age and have the same level and learning abilities do we consider joint lessons.

The lessons take place at your child's school or at your home, depending on the school's willingness to collaborate, your own preference, and your child's age.

The goal of a pre-departure language course is to introduce a child to a new school language. The emphasis is on getting used to the sounds, basic vocabulary, and school terminology. Older children will also be trained in formal reading and writing.

Students with a basic level in the school language will extend their knowledge, with emphasis on academic vocabulary and applying formal application of the language in a school situation (i.e. writing essays, oral presentations).

Once abroad, the daily use of the new language will improve the child's level very quickly. The language course is meant to allow for a good start.

 

Educational Advice


Certainly! We do have specific information about common host locations. The information in our database includes basic details, as well as collected experiences of other families and information gathered when contacting and visiting schools and related agencies.

If you will be moving to a country, region, or city for which we do not yet have extensive information, then we will research this area for you! With the experience and network of our educational consultants, we know exactly which questions to ask when exploring a new area.

In an EMC you will receive an overview of the educational consequences for your child(ren) expected to result from your expatriation, cross-posting, or repatriation. This assessment is based on the information you have provided us via a questionnaire and shared school reports.

In the EMC report you will find our educational consultant's view shared on several critical aspects of the relocation. In some cases your own view and choices will be confirmed, in other cases we may identify risks or possible consequences that we would like to discuss more thoroughly during an educational consultation.

If an employer has sponsored the educational consultation, Edufax will provide a brief feedback report to your employer. In this feedback the focus is on expected costs for education now and in the future. Main risks are outlined, for instance if the timing of the move abroad or return home is expected to have significant consequences. No sensitive information about your children's personal situation will be shared.
